Applying Top Coats like Clear Vision PPS-2974

Illusion/Dormant Blue-Berg with a Clear Vision Top Coat (Submitted By: Clarity Auto Detailing in Houston, TX)

When applying top coats like Clear Vision PPS 2974, we recommend the following:

Partial curing the base coat, this will ensure proper bonding between the base and top coat. Failure to do so can lead to delamination from the base coat. **Exceptions are SUPER CHROME II PSS-10300 and ULTRA BLACK CHROME USS 5402 which should be fully cured before applying a top coat.**

Spraying the recommended mil thickness, which is between 2-3 mils; applying a coating heavier may cause excessive orange peel.

Tip: Try applying just enough powder to cover the part until it turns frosty white, just to the point where the base coat color disappears. Shoot faraday cage and difficult to reach areas first.

Steps for the smoothest flow out:

Always place the part into a preheated oven (375F).
Bake until the powder flows into a smooth glossy finish.
Check part metal temperature with Infrared Gun (Cure times are based off of part metal temp).
When the part reaches 375F, start an 18 minute timer for a full cure.

Q&A

I will be applying PPB 7046 Disco Tangerine over PSS 0106 Ink Black. Ink Black is applied at 45 kv, so I figure that I will have to bring down the kv setting for the top coat to between 30-35. Am I right ? And also, should half cure the Ink Black ? Thank you very much.

That is correct! We generally recommend lowering your KV roughly 10 units when going to apply your second coat of powder. Your Ink Black should be brought to the gel/flow-out stage and allowed to stay in the oven for an additional few minutes before removing it from the oven, allowing it to cool, and then applying your clear metallic top coat.

I am using Clear Vision PPS-2974 over Illusion Cherry PMB-6905. In some areas of the rim I am not getting the color change I need. These areas are pink in color instead of the deep red like the rest of the rim.

If the base coat is applied too light in those areas or the clear coat is applied too light in those areas then you won't get the deep rich red you are hoping for. Often times those areas are harder to coat so steps need to be taken to coat these "Faraday" areas. This can be done through KV settings and ground inspection, prep procedure including out gassing, coating procedure, flow-out use, and last result hot coating (never recommended).

Looking to apply Clear Vision PPS-2974 over Moz Blue PMB-2642. The suggested cure time for Moz Blue is 12 mins at 400 but since this is a base coat how should I proceed with curing?

Normally base coats (Moz Blue in this case) are brought to flow-out or flow-out plus a couple of minutes depending on the color. In this instance, bring Moz Blue PMB-2642 to Flow-out and pull to cool. Once cooled, then proceed with Clear Vision PPS-2974. Fully cure Clear Vision per it's curing instructions and both the Moz Blue and Clear Vision will bond together for a lasting, durable finish. Clear Vision cures for 18 minutes at 375 degrees F. Curing timer is not set until AFTER part metal reaches cure temp of 375 degrees F.

I am adding clear vision to gloss black I’m curious why I am getting a sparkle almost it’s driving me nuts

Gloss Black and Clear Vision do not have metallic flakes in them. Is there a possibility that your equipment hoses, gun, hopper or spray booth has leftover metallic flakes or similar that could contaminate the powder? We thoroughly clean our hoppers, air hoses, guns and booth for each color change. Even the smallest amount of powder can cause a large scale contamination.

To achieve a gloss level like gloss black and ink black there are fine metallic flakes within the powder. For Gloss black the flakes are usually bluish in color whereas with Ink Black you will see brown colored flakes. These are not completely visible when applied as a single coating. Because black shows EVERYTHING and a clear coat will only magnify these flakes you will see these more easily than without the clear applied. Also, Clear Coats can pull flakes like this to the surface. This is exactly how our Illusion series powders work....the Clear is used to pull colored flakes to the surface to achieve a brilliant color.

I am putting clear vision pps2974 over Bentley blue. My question is Bentley blue bakes at 400 for 10 minutes. At what temperature should I pull it out and let cool down so that I can spray the clear?

Thank you for your inquiry,Bentley Blue is a top coat itself so there really is no need for Clear Vision, however, if you want to add Clear Vision you can place Bentley Blue in until flow-out plus 2 minutes then remove from the oven, allow to cool and then apply your clear vision following it's cure instructions.

Bentley Blue would only be partially cured...brought to flow-out then removed to cool. Flow-out happens long before the cure process begins and usually around 250-300 degrees. Then apply your clear coat and cure both coatings off of the Clear Coat's application guide. Application guides can be found on the website for each color.
