Substrate preparation is probably the most important consideration with this project. The use of a burn off oven was very beneficial in aiding of the removal of the old coating. Sand-Blasting with 100 grit aluminum oxide or garnet sand provides an excellent adhesion profile for a powder coat application and removed all burned off residue and left-over corrosion spots. Using protective gloves and keeping the garden bicycle away from clothing will keep the piece from gaining contaminants that will affect your cured powder's outcome.
After blowing off excess sand and dust from the garden bicycle, it can be helpful to discharge the bicycle from built up static which can occur during the sand-blasting and handling process.
With a protective coating of Zinc-Rich Epoxy Primer ESS-10171 and Gloss White PSS-5690 this garden bicycle should be well protected from the elements for years to come.
