Can you spray liquid automotive clear over the super chrome to help stop greying affect of the clear vison?

Question by Support on Jul 31, 2018
ANSWER: The application of a top coat whether it is a liquid or a powder does result in a slight loss of reflectivity, but it should not be turning grey. If it is turning grey it sounds like the Super Chrome may still be under cured when the top coat is applied. NIC Support

how durable is Chrome Powder Coating with Clear coat to scratching and chipping?

Question by Support on Jul 21, 2018
ANSWER: Powder coating is known for its resistance to chipping, mainly due to its flexibility and coating thickness, however it can still scuff and scratch therefor it should be treated as normal paint would be. NIC Support
Answer by Support on Jul 23, 2018

Powdercoated the super chrome on a new Members Mark 30 ounce stainless cup. The cup had no marks on it, but when it came out of the oven there were black scratch marks that looked like they were in the powdercoat. When it went on, it looked like a really nice even powder coat.

Question by Support on Jul 11, 2018
ANSWER: Please contact our Technical Support at technicalsupport@prismaticpowders.com If you have images of the black marks send those as well. NIC Support

In one question you say it can be partial cured before clear coat and then another question you say if its turning grey then it wasnt fully cured. I cure at 400 and the overspray light areas turn brownish . There is no way this could go up to 450.

Question by Support on Jul 03, 2018
ANSWER: To clarify, the question that was asked was if a second coat of Super Chrome could be used. It that case, only a partial cure would be necessary because it would not matter what the base coat of Super Chrome looks like. Only the top layer of Super Chrome would need the final cure. The binding elements of the Super Chrome formulation are actually a brownish color, that is likely what you are seeing especially since you mentioned that you only see it in the overspray and lightly coated areas. It absolutely can handle 450F degrees, no question. NIC Support

They are cast aluminum. I even heated them to 450 before I started spraying them.

Question by Support on Jun 26, 2018
ANSWER: How long they outgas for is as important as the temp itself. Cast aluminum is known to gas out badly sometimes and may take a couple of hours or more before it is completely purged. NIC Support

Can I run this powder through 3 cure cycles? A first one to cure it, a second one for a top coat, and a third time masked to shoot an adjacent area?

Question by Support on Apr 25, 2018
ANSWER: It should be fine but you may want to use the lower curing temp 400-420F rather than the higher 450F curing temp. NIC Support
Answer by Support on Apr 25, 2018

how do i get the super chrome to lay down smooth. i have shot it light, heavy, with a primer,at 450*. i get orange peal every time. what am i doing wrong?

Question by Support on Apr 09, 2018
ANSWER: You definitely need to stay within the 3 mil thickes. Pushing it past that will cause orange peel to form more. Also make sure you get the powder to flow out as quickly as you can. The more quickly you can get the powder to flow the smoother the finish will be. NIC Support
Answer by Support on Apr 09, 2018

Can you use a urethane candy color spray over super Chrome? Will it also act as a protective barrier like clear coat?

Question by Support on Mar 27, 2018
ANSWER: Yes, urethane, polyester, epoxy and acrylics can be used over top of Super Chrome. All of them will protect the metallic of the Super Chrome however epoxy top coats are not UV stable. NIC Support
Answer by Support on Mar 27, 2018

With the super chrome and clear are you still able to use a polisher to clean and shine them on wheels 1 to 2 times a year or would this damage the coating?

Question by Support on Mar 19, 2018
ANSWER: Powder coating does not polish up the same way metals do. Most polishes use abrasive compounds which work well on hard metals but powder coating is pretty soft and may have adverse effects when trying to use the same method. We only recommend the use of a mild detergent soak and water. NIC Support

How does the chrome coat hold up on be headers

Question by Support on Mar 17, 2018
ANSWER: It would not be recommended to use this on exhaust components, Cerakote Glacier Chrome W400 would be far better suited for this use. Powders are generally safe up to about 250 but any sustained temps above that will reduce the life expectancy of the powder. NIC Support
Answer by Support on Mar 19, 2018

Can I use Super Chrome as stand alone finish or should I apply a clear top coat?

Question by Support on Feb 28, 2018
ANSWER: A clear top coat should be used to maintain the chrome like appearance. The metallic in the finish can oxidize over time, a top coat prevents the oxidation from occurring by creating a barrier between the metallic and the oxidizing elements. NIC Support
Answer by Support on Feb 28, 2018

Is there a clear coat that will NOT turn Super Chrome to battleship grey? I have used Clear Vision powder and MC-160 ceramic clear and they both reduce the chrome look to a shiny grey. Is Super Chrome durable and anti-corrosion enough to use in automotive applications without a clear coat? Thanks.

Question by Support on Feb 21, 2018
ANSWER: If Super Chrome is turning grey under the clear that is a critical indicator that the Super Chrome is under cured when the top coat is applied. We recommend that you contact our Technical Adviser for curing suggestions. technicalsupport@prismaticpowders.com NIC Support
